Verizon knocks off $350M from Yahoo deal after breaches

Verizon Communications will pay $350 million less for Yahoo after two major data breaches reported by the struggling internet pioneer.

Verizon will pay about $4.48 billion for Yahoo’s operating business, and the two companies will share any potential legal and regulatory liabilities arising from two major data breaches announced in late 2016. The companies announced the amended terms of the deal Tuesday.

Back in October, one news report had Verizon seeking a $1 billion discount after the first breach was announced.

IDG Contributor Network: Will Alexa become my companion data analyst?

Alexa joined our family at Christmas.

She lives inside Amazon’s Echo device, now in our kitchen, and responds to our voice commands. Nothing feels more natural than asking Alexa to turn on the radio. There are no buttons, no scanning, just a voice command to start up what we want to listen to. As my children grow up, they’ll get to a point where they couldn’t imagine pressing buttons to do something as menial as start up some music in the room they are in.

But what if Alexa could help me understand my data? Stephen Few, a leading writer in the field of data sensemaking, recently wrote a great article explaining why he thinks natural language processing (NLP) does not have a future as an input mechanism for making sense of data.

Orchestrators like Kubernetes help manage groups of containers. Many cloud providers like Microsoft offer services that help simplify the management of that whole system even further. ACS is one such service.

That’s right, it’s time for Planet Earth II. To prepare for the show (the series is one of my favorites of all time), I had to make sure all of my 4K ducks were lined up. First, I arranged to test the Vizio SmartCast P-Series 65-inch Ultra HD HDR Home Theater television that costs $1,900 and supports both 4K and HDR. The HDR support is particularly important, beyond the high-resolution display quality, because it gives everything a crisp, movie-like appearance. Blacks look rich and deep, and the colors pop.
