Net admin pilot fish gets word that the security camera system at a remote facility isn’t recording, so he connects remotely to the digital video recorder to check the settings.

“Turns out that, on this particular DVR, the setting to record over old data could only be changed from the physical DVR, not the web interface,” says fish.

“I didn’t want to drive five hours to change the settings on the DVR, so I called our ‘tech’ on site. I asked him to get into the server room, disconnect the VGA cable, keyboard and mouse from a server and connect it to the DVR so I could walk him through how to change the settings.

“He disconnected the video cable from the server and plugged it into the DVR, but had no picture. I got him to FaceTime me so I could see what was going on, and then asked him to show me the cable he moved.
